Cranio-Sacral Therapy
What is Cranio-Sacral Therapy (CST)?
The principle of the therapy is a soft touch (less than the weight of a nickel placed on your forearm) used by a certified therapist to gently release restrictions in the cranio-sacral system. The therapy is used to reduce tightness and compression in the tissues of the jaw, mouth, head, neck, spine, pelvis, and other structures in the body. When restrictions are released, the muscles can move freely without the pressure of the fascia holding them down. This gentle, hands-on technique works with the soft tissue structures of the body and the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid from the head to the base of the spine. The increase in flow of cerebrospinal fluid prompts a natural healing response within the body.
How does CST play a role in tongue & lip tie release?
When there are restrictions within the mouth, there are often restrictions elsewhere in the body, as there is a thin layer of tissue that runs from the base of our tongue to the tips of our toes called fascia. If there is a restriction within the oral cavity, other areas of tightness along this same fascial line may exist. (see pic) (I’ve e-mailed Adrienne and asked for a picture).Bodywork like Craniosacral Therapy works to identify any areas of tightness and release them so that the muscles don’t have to work so hard to complete their job. When muscles are moving freely, activities of daily living become easier for a child to excel at including nursing, feeding and Speech & Language development.
How would CST benefit my child?
Conditions listed below would greatly benefit from Cranio-Sacral Therapy:
Birth Trauma (Pre-natal, birth or post-natal)
History of Torticollis or Plagiocephaly
Tethered Oral Tissues such as lip, tongue or buccal ties
Oral Motor Disorders-sucking and swallowing difficulty
Sinus and Breathing Problems
Ear infections-Chronic Otitis Media and Eustachian Tube problems “glue ear”
Cranial Molding and Lesion Patterns
Developmental Delays
Delayed Speech Development
Sensory Processing Difficulties
